CURATED FILM: The Awakening (Pt. 1)

In 2020, Fearless Artistry debuted a series of short films highlighting the vast contributions made by people of color, especially Black people, across the globe. With each film under 2 minutes, these curations feature a myriad of images and multi-genres of sounds to render an engaging impression—hopefully compelling the audience to revisit the visual presentations for further consideration.

The first film, “The Awakening” opens with images of an approaching subway train, speeding along the tracks, in a northern US city around the mid-1970s. Calls from a tweeting bird in a rainforest give way to bellows of a throat-singing monk and expand to percussive rhythms of a majestic marching band. The piece cuts to a woman dressed in a work uniform and walking shoes, commuting into the city, but she’s walking backward. Other images in “The Awakening” feature a summer day at a local city pool, life in Chicago in the 1940s and images of outer space which flash further into the unknown, a static-filled void. The conclusion of this brief presentation offers a cyclical conclusion of the journeys in life.
